A Busy Day In Southwest England

Today was our most ambitious yet. Leaving early, we set out on a coach tour of southern England. Our destinations included Windsor Castle, Stonehenge and Bath. Roundtrip, we travelled about 240 miles today. The map at right will give you some idea of where we were. Since we stopped for several hours at each site and had to work within the parameters of their limited opening hours it required serious and well coordinated effort to cover the ground efficiently. Fortunately, the tour company we booked through, Evan Evans tours, managed things flawlessly. The trip was made even more interesting by the fact that we managed to join on a day when bilingual tours are conducted, in our case in English and Japanese. Our tour guide, Crissy, was one of those people you might expect to encounter at the grocery store riding a bus in London to pick up groceries or to report to her non-descript job. You would assume that the farthest she had ever travelled was probably to her hometown in some nearby suburb of London. You would be very wrong because the woman effortlessly switched between English and Japanese and gave very comprehensive tours in both. It was surreal. We returned tired but satisfied that our day was well spent. Our detailed observations of the sights we saw follow.
