Shopping Where the Queen Shops

We made two trips to ogle the shopping at high-end stores near the Royal Academy of Arts. Our first stop was the Burlingon Arcade. Built in 1819, it is London's oldest "mall" (although its creators wouldn't have understood that term.) Laura was wowed by a f22,000 Rolex in a shop window, while skeptical Olivia couldn't quite work out how a small shop selling only gloves and another selling only swim trunks could stay in business. Scott's taste proved to be the most rarified, when he picked out a silver and crystal candleabra as his favorite item. Price tag: f355,000, to which Olivia responded: "Dad, you're dangerous. Let's get you out of here." Next it was Fortnum and Mason conveniently located across the street. It has all kinds of high end goodies, including a bouquet of fresh flowers that we spotted on entering. There were probably 15 stems in all of ordinary varieties, but there was nothing ordinary about the f59 price tag! We were also impressed by the dried muscatel grapes-- of a high-end-raisin. There were maybe 25 raisins in the package, and they can tantalize your tastebuds for a little over f50. F&M services the queen and the palace, which given current inflationary conditions, is under pressure to cut expenses. My guess is she could make a good start by switching the royal shopping to Tesco or Sainsbury.
