Preparation

Ever wonder what it takes to move your entire life to Europe? Believe it or not, you can fit it all into six suitcase and five backpacks weighing in at around 250 lbs. Clothes are just the beginning. Favorite stuffed animals and blankets, educational materials for use while there, laptops and computer peripherals, gifts for friends and family--it all has to go in bags that will not result in overcharges and will pass muster with customs. My favorite item of all had to be the one packed by our three-year-old, Cecily, who wanted to put "gwass" in her backpack. "There's no gwass in London," she informed me. Somehow, she got the idea in her head that because the house where we are staying has only a courtyard and no lawn, the entire city is devoid of grass. So her plan was to bring along her own. We're only hoping as we go through customs it doesn't occur to her to raise the issue of the "gwass" she has stashed in her backpack! It could be an awkward start to the trip.
